Donkeys were everywhere, and we couldn't resist the sight of great camel faces! The sand, layered rocks, sea views.....all pretty fantastic. Can't wait to go back and explore some more!

The Wadi Rum

The Wadi Rum is in the south, near Aqaba. We went diving in the morning and then desert exploring in the afternoon (not a bad day!!) Here's Bruce on camel ride to the old Nabatean temple. Again, everywhere you look - huge rocky mountains, red sand and great views!

Petra

We spent two days walking around Petra, and could easily have spent another. There was always so much to see and new views every where you turned. You can see the carved out camels in the canyon where Bruce is standing (this was a caravan route). The colours were amazing, and constantly changing as the sunlight changed.

I had to make two postings of Petra because one just wasn't enough! The red sand, and amazing carved out rock-mountain sides were incredible. There are several hikes up for views overlooking the Petra "city", and the walk in through the canyon (siq) is really a sight. You can see a glimpse of the treasury where Bruce is standing (now we need to rent "The Last Crusade" again...) Also, a pretty unique little lizard that sat just still enough for a few clicks of the camera!

The Dead Sea and the view from Mount Nebo

There's nothing quite like the Dead Sea, although after 15 - 20 minutes, the salt begins to give you that slightly "burning" feeling! It's so dense that it's even hard to swim!

The view from Mount Nebo - the map shows the general directions and distances. The view was not so clear the day we were there, but it does offer sights beyond the Dead sea, and into the Jordan Valley. This is where Moses stood and viewed the Promised Land.

We had a great time swimming at the pools and looking out over the sea. The hills across the Dead Sea are in Israel.

Jerash and the Jordan River

The ancient city of Jerash is located north of Amman. It is considered to be one of the best preserved Roman cities in the world.

At the Jordan river we saw the location where Jesus was believed to have been baptized (the part that looks like the dry river bed), and the current location of the river now (slightly to the west). Across the river you can see the West Bank region of Israel (in front of where Bruce is standing).

We had such a great time helping out with the build. Our habitat hosts were excellent organizers and took great care of us.

We dug and dug and dug some more.....and couldn't believe how much more digging there was to still be done!

Bruce and Diana getting set for their next job. The YMCA, where we stayed, had several unexpected residents! There was quite the family of monkeys living around the grounds.

India Habitat Trip

Sights around Delhi and Agra. Cool little "school bus" and the amazing Taj.

We toured a seikh temple, rode rikshaws, saw cotton being dyed in the field, ate great good. It is quite a sensation-full country!

The Mediterranean

YEY!! The Mediterranean, as beautiful as expected. We swam, collected the smoothest stones ever, sat in the sun and wandered the town (Nerja). Loved it!!

In Toledo, we separated paths from Shelley and Rick (they stayed in Toledo when we headed back to Madrid). Our last lunch together.... (sad..) Thanks Shelley and Rick for a great trip!

Granada

The Alhambra was really quite spectacular. The carved plaster walls and tile were incredible. There is an extensive garden area there as well, which is really beautiful (love to have those gardeners!!)

There were lots of opportunities to buy fresh spices. Have you ever seen such orange safron?

Seville

We watched a great show of flamenco dancing, music and singing too. (Front row seats!)

Yep, a meal of bread and peanut butter....very spain-like...

but much cheaper than eating in a restaurant (and not quite so late!)

Madrid

Madrid was great! This is the royal residence, which is directly across from the cathedral. The cathedral allows you a view over the city.

We rented bikes and rode around the parque retiro, which was beautiful and the weather was perfect. Not quite Stanley Park (hard to beat...)but very nice.

We went to see Real Madrid play (they won). Also, several trips to Starbucks!!

Whistler

Whistler 2008! We had a great time hanging out in Whistler...solving puzzles, riding bikes, and browsing the town. The weather was PERFECT!

Cairo - the crazy city!!

Blocks that weigh 2.5 tonnes....and nearly as tall as me! Pretty amazing feat. The statue is of Ramses 2 in Memphis, Egypt's first capital - it is enormous. I don't think that I even reached his ear. (It's lying in the museum there, and takes up the whole building.)

Bruce at the Egypt museum. The crazy market (Khan al khalili) where we hardly dared stop to look at things for fear of the shopkeepers!

The Nile was really beautiful - lots of trees were in bloom so it was very colorful. In Coptic Cairo we visited one of the Christian churches that had some really beautiful mosaics. We visited the pyramids too - here's Bruce with the sphinx!
